Mary L. Gilman, 95, Springfield, Virginia and formerly of Oblong, Illinois passed away at 6:45 a.m. Eastern Time, Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Crystal Garden Assisted Living Center, Springfield, Virginia. Born in Manila, Philippines on November 13, 1915, she was the daughter of Christian Martin Tagesen and Natividad Dela Rosa (Alejaeo) Tagesen. She was employed with the Ettlebrick Shoe Factory, Robinson, Illinois for 12 years; Tempco Products, Robinson, Illinois for 12 years and for many years was a seamstress doing alternations. Mary moved to the Oblong area in 1946 and later moved into Oblong in 1984. She was a member of the Seed Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School; was song leader for many years and also a member of the United Methodist Women’s group. Mary moved from Oblong to Porter, Indiana in 2006 to live with her nephew and later moved to Springfield, Virginia in September 2010 to live with her niece.
On October 29, 1946, she married Ralph Jesse Gilman, who preceded her in death on October 13, 1982. Also preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Theodore Allen “Ted” Gilman and one nephew, Ralph Pinkston.
Mary is survived by three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mercedes Delfino and Helen Onrubia; several nieces, nephews and a daughter-in-law.
