CELEBRATION OF MARILYN’S LIFE: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the Oblong First Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Oblong Cemetery.

Marilyn Maxine Sholders passed away Friday, September 23, 2016 at 5:05 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Marilyn was born in Oblong, IL on September, 21 1935. She was the daughter of Samuel Otho Allen and Lucille Kitty (Leggitt) Allen. On October 22, 1955 she married Garold Sholders who survives.

Marilyn began her working career at Hal Keith Leggitt’s Furniture Store in Oblong. She later worked at the First National Bank of Oblong for several years before transitioning into her favorite job of being a mother, homemaker, and farm wife.

She attended Brush Creek School; a one-room school house located a mile from where she grew up. Marilyn graduated from Oblong Township High School in 1953. She was an avid supporter of the agricultural events in the community, always in attendance at the Crawford County Fair and Antique Tractor Show. Marilyn had also been a member of the First Christian Church of Oblong since 1950.

She loved gardening, working alongside Garold on the family farm, cooking and baking. She also loved decorating both birthday and wedding cakes for her family members. Marilyn was well known for a few things, such as her famous peanut butter sheet cake, sweet potato casserole, and homemade noodles. Marilyn and Garold always attended the various events their kids and grandkids participated in, including sports, cattle shows, and many other activities the family was involved in. Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family and friends.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Garold Sholders; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Ocie Smith III and Janice and Kerry Travis; four granddaughters, Kylie and Dustin Veach, Danielle and Connor McCoy, Carley and Camryn Travis; one great-grandson, Mason Veach, all of Oblong, IL; a sister-in-law, Jan Allen of Wayzata, MN, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Jane Sholders, brother-in-law, Terry Sholders, all of Oblong, IL, sister-in-law, Sue Provines, Robinson, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Marilyn in death were her parents Samuel and Lucille Allen; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ivan and Ruby Sholders; one brother, Sammy K. Allen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clarence and Lois Shew, and brother-in-law, Finley Provines.
