Leslie ” Les” Hicks, 82, Oblong, Illinois, passed away Sunday September 16, 2012 at the V A Hospital in Danville, Illinois.
Les was born in Cullman, Alabama, on April 10, 1930 and was the son of Leon E. Hicks and Rosa (Hogue) Hicks. On January 14, 1980, he married Sandra Jo “Sandy” Shields.
Les was a power lineman for IBEW Local 485, out of South Carolina, traveling throughout the United States for 33 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the United States Air Force as an Airman 2nd Class during the Korean Conflict. Les was affiliated with the Oblong Wesleyan Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Department of American Veterans. He had previously lived in Tallahassee, Florida, before moving to the Robinson and Oblong area in 1978.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Jo “Sandy” Hicks; three step children James and Cheryl Harding, Susan and Jim Baud and Melissa Reed; three grandchildren Christy and Eric Drum, J. D. and Anne Baud and Jessica and Seth Brooks; three great-grandchildren Brandon Morris, Sydney Drum and Chad Drum; sister-in-law Linda Hicks; two cousins J. W. Hicks and Joseph Hicks; and three nephews Mark Hicks, Gary Hicks and Danny Hicks.
Les was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers J. C. , Robert Dale, Jerry Wayne and infant twin brothers Bobby Jo and Billy Jo Hicks; nephew Jason Hicks and a stepson-in-law Jonathan Reed.
Bro. Phil Boyd will officate and Oblong American Legion Post #219 will conduct Military Rites at the funeral home.
It was Les’s request that his body be cremated following his service and his cremains entombed in Oblong Cemetery.
