Thomas L."Tom" Hammond, 79, Oblong, Illinois, passed away Wednesday March 24, 2010, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, Illinois. Tom was born April 4, 1930, in Centralia, Illinois and was the son of Oran R. & Elmira (Davis) Hammond. On February 25, 1950 he married Vera (Hayden) Hammond and they had just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Tom worked in the maintenance department for Oblong Community School District #4, retiring in 1984. He also did painting and wall papering for many years. Tom was a member of Fur Takers of America, enjoyed trapping, fishing, hunting, camping and just loved the outdoors. Tom also enjoyed building balsa wood model airplanes. Tom is survived by his wife Vera Hammond; two daughters and a son-in-law Vickie & Mike Rennier and Judy Wells and her companion Terry “Bear” Clatfelter; Joe Patterson who was like a son to the family, seven grandchildren Thomas & Brenda Hammond III, David & Shannon White, Jenni & Warren Swingle, Joey & Claire Wells, Ashley & Jose Garcia, Samatha & Ron Ferris and Kenny & Aleah Clatfelter; thirteen great grandchildren, one brother Bruce Hammond; one sister Myra Savoy; one daughter-in-law Carolyn Hammond as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding Tom in death were his parents; one son Thomas Hammond Jr.; and one brother William Hammond. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery. |
