William R. “Bill” Black, 79, Oblong, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on Saturday August 8, 2009 and 3:42 a.m. He was in the Long Term Care Unit of Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, Illinois. Bill was born November 9, 1926 in Westfield, Illinois and was the son of Russell F. Black and Mary Jane Stricker Black. On February 15, 1947, he married Alene Taylor who preceded him in death on May 1, 1965. On June 3, 1966, he married Louise Dennis Chapman. Bill worked for Marathon Oil Company for 38 ½ years retiring in 1985 as a Superintendent in Michigan. He was a proud veteran of WWII serving as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class aboard the USS Bowie. Bill was a member of First Christian Church, Oblong; Oblong Masonic Lodge AF&AM #644; 32nd Degree Mason at The Valley of Danville, IL.; He enjoyed tinkering in the garage; woodworking; NASCAR and fixing bikes for his grandchildren to ride.

Bill is survived by his wife Louise; two sons and daughters-in-laws Chris & Darla Black and Steve & Linda Chapman; two daughters and sons-in-laws Donna (Black) & David Dresslar and Martha & David Bouren; eight grandchildren Jamie Delly, Kyle Black, TJ Bourne, Sarah Jankowski, Jessica Chapman, Mark Chapman, Ashley Dresslar and Lacey Dresslar; four great grandchildren Brayden Black, Sofia Delly, Caleb Jankowski and McKenna Blaylock; one brother and sister-in-law Robert & Jewel Black as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents; first wife; one son Gerald Chapman; one sister Betty Thacker and one brother Ronald Black.

Burial will be in Oblong Cemetery.
