Mac K. Whitmer, 79, Oblong, passed away March 24, 2008, at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Indiana after a brief illness.
Mac was born August 18, 1928, in Crawford County, Illinois to Dewey and Clevie (Wilson) Whitmer. He was a Pumper for the Oblong Oil Company and a retired farmer. Mac loved being outdoors. He was an avid bird hunter and passed along his passion for hunting to his grandsons. Mac played sports in his youth and later coached girls softball. He was a life-long St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packer's fan. He never missed a game. He was very involved in any of the sports and activities that his grandchildren participated in. Mac was one of the original founding members of the Oblong Girls Softball program and loved watching his granddaughters play softball. He was also a strong supporter of Oblong 4-H by helping to improve the 4-H facilities and was always present when his daughters showed their 4-H cattle. Mac was so proud of the numerous academic achievements of his grandchildren, but most of all they each knew their PaPaw loved them unconditionally.
Mac is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Ann (York) Whitmer along with his five daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Charlie Miller, Lesa and Don Harper Jr., Torrie and Ron Hayes, Amy and Brian Maus, and DeAnn and Jeff Burner. Eight grandchildren, Justin, his wife Amanda, and Travis Miller, Devan and fiance Michael Fuller and Whitney Harper and Jarod Hoke, Tanner and his wife Krystal, and Thad Hays, Ashley Maus, and Courtney Smothers. Mother-in-law, Mildred M. York and sister-in-law, Karla K. Monroe, her husband Gary and their sons Jared and Shan; also surviving are several nieces and nephews and extended family.
