Holt, 86, Oblong, Illinois passed away at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, Illinois. Born on July 5, 1921, in Crawford County (North of Oblong) he was the son of Chester Lee Holt and Hazel (Smith) Holt. He served in the U.S. Army during W. W. II with the 503 Airborne Division as a Paratrooper. He was later employed as a logger; foreman for Bailey Brothers Construction Co. & Saw Mill where he later became owner and operator. Howard was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church, Oblong where he formerly served as Sunday School Superintendent. He served on the Oblong School Board in the 50's and 60's; Crawford Co. Board - 1980's - 1990's; member of the Oblong American Legion Post #219; lifetime member of the V.F.W.; and Oak Glenn Golf Course. Howard was a graduate of Oblong High School - Class of 1940. He was a true Cardinal fan. Howard enjoyed vacations in the Smokey Mountains and Florida; playing golf and gardening. He tinkered with cars and loved the Newport Hill Climb in Indiana. On March 18, 1948, he married Frances G. Barnhart, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard & Rachel Holt and Jon & Jill Holt; two daughters and son-in-law, Jackie & Rod Higgins and Nancy Holt; 9 grandchildren, Chris Briner & Michelle Morrison, Shara York, Garrett Briner, Aubin Brooks Whitmer, Aaron & Jamie Holt, Julie & Ryan Weimer, Lindsey Holt, Jessica Holt and Jensen Holt; one great-granddaughter, Lacey York; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert & June Holt; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Weldon Holt; and one sister, Mary Bailey. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, rural Jasper County, Illinois. |
