William D. "Bill" Tipton, 76, of Terre Haute, Indiana and formerly of Robinson, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 1:58 a.m. (EST) at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Indiana. Bill was born in Hunt City, Illinois on February 15, 1930 and was the son of Willilam "Ernest" & Emma Mae (Snider) Tipton. On October 9, 1954, he married Betty L. Thompson in Robinson, Illinois and was married for 51 years before his wife's death. Bill retired from CIPS after 15 years. Prior to that he served 27 years in the United States Army. He lived in France, Iran, Thailand, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Okinawa, 2 active tours in Vietnam, and several states while in the Army. He retired as a Master Sergeant. During his service he earned several medals and commendations: Good Conduct Medal (8 times),National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Vietnam Service Medal w/Three Bronze Service Stars, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal w/One Silver Star, Army Commendation Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of the Terre Haute V.F.W. Post #972, Robinson American Legion Post #69 and the Terre Haute Moose Lodge #1009. Bill is survived by his daughter, Pamela Kai and husband Mikio; a son, Terry Tipton and wife Kelly; a son, Tim Tipton; a sister, Audrey Wilson; four grandsons; two granddaughters; several nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty L. (Thompson) Tipton; their infant son, Mark Alan Tipton; his parents; two brothers, Ernest Jr. & infant brother James; five sisters, Nina Smith, Wanda Milsap, Wilma Wright, Ada Kathryn Woolsey and Thelma Tipton. Bill's request for no visitation will be honored by his family. Family and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. (CST) Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at Pulliam Funeral Home, Oblong, with Bro. Rusty Morecraft officiating with a short committal after the service at the Oblong Cemetery. |
