Lloyd Pete Spaugh, 83, Oblong, Illinois, died unexpectedly about 5 a.m. Sunday morning, October 14, 2007, at his home having suffered an apparent heart attack. He had been in poor health for several months, having battled throat cancer. He was fondly known by his many friends in Crawford and Jasper Counties as "Pepsi Pete", since he excelled as a Pepsi Cola salesman. Born July 16, 1924, on a farm near Annapolis, he was the son of Earnest C. and Cora Bline Spaugh. Pete was employed by L. S. Heath & Sons Candy Company in Robinson, for 40 years. At the time of his retirement in 1988, he served as assistant plant manager. He was, at the time, honored with a retirement party at the Quail Creek Country Club, attended by his family and close friends. During World War II, he served four years, in the U. S. Army. Pete was affiliated with the Oblong Wesleyan Church and visited often by Pastor Leonard Waller, during Pete's months of declining health. He was also an avid (TV) NASCAR "Mark Martin" fan; and rooted for his teams, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. Pete lived all his married life in Oblong, and was well known and loved in this community.

Pete and his wife Retha (Smith), were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on November 2, 2007. Besides his wife, survivors include four daughters and a son, Linda (Dick) Parker, Colleen (Rey) Becker, Suellen (John) Lewis, Debbie (Dave) Earlewine and Jay Dee Spaugh; ten grandchildren, Andy Goff, Derek Parker, Tara Marie Spencer, Matt Goff, Tama Lynn Ostrow, Jennifer Sanders, Damon and Daron Earlewine, Adrienne and Loren Elizabeth Spaugh; 21 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Charlotte Bennett, Roni Spencer Greene, Carol S. Myers and Gracie Good; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Good and Everett Greene; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Preceding Pete in death were his parents; daughter-in-law, Carole Spaugh; baby grandson, Brian Keith Lackey; three brothers, Nolla Ray, Orlin Gay, and Leland Gene Spaugh; one sister, Zoe Marie, who died at birth; also his mother-in-law, Sylvia P. Smith.

Burial is in Oblong Cemetery, Oblong, Illinois.
