Rev. Zay "Boosie" Smith 90, Oblong, died Sunday June 1, 2003 at Ridgeview Care Center, Oblong, Illinois. Zay was born in Crawford County, Illinois on January 11, 1913 and he was the son of Wiley Smith and Lela (Wright) Smith. On January 30, 1933, he married Velma E. Hardin, who died January 1, 2000. Zay served as pastor for many churches, held many revivals and was involved in the ministry at Ridgeview Care Center. Zay also worked at Big Buck Lumber in Robinson for 37 years. Zay was ordained in 1966 and was a member of the Berlin Congregational Christian Church, rural Oblong. His hobby was the church work he did for many years.

Four sons and daughters-in-laws James W. Smith Sr. survive Zay, Thomas L. & Henrietta Smith, L. Eugene & Mary Smith and Clarence R. & Jennie Smith; one daughter and son in law Sandra Sue & Steven Garner; 24 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren; son-in-law Wade Hartleroad; several nieces, nephews and Zay's extended family of Roy Dean & Ireta Jordan.

Preceding Zay in death are his parents, wife, son Michael Smith, daughter Joan Hartleroad, grandson Richard Smith, one sister, two brothers and a daughter-in-law Marie Smith.

Burial will be in Berlin Cemetery.
